What DSIP is
DSIP was first isolated in 1977 by Swiss researchers from rabbit blood during electrically induced sleep. Sequence: Trp-Ala-Gly-Gly-Asp-Ala-Ser-Gly-Glu. Found in hypothalamus and pituitary. Named because injecting it into rabbits increased delta wave (deepest non-REM sleep) activity.
Mechanism, in plain English
Not fully mapped. Known actions: modulates GABA-A receptors, influences corticotropin and cortisol release, affects LH secretion, may interact with opioid receptors. Rather than a simple 'sleep switch,' DSIP appears to be a stress-buffering and circadian-modulating peptide that promotes sleep indirectly by reducing stress hormones and normalizing disrupted rhythms.

Early animal studies showed increased delta sleep and reduced sleep latency. Small human studies (1980s-1990s, European) reported improved sleep quality in insomnia and normalized patterns in narcolepsy. Most human data from small, older studies. No large RCTs exist. Rapid degradation in blood complicates research.
