What oxytocin is
Oxytocin is a cyclic nonapeptide produced in the hypothalamus and released by the posterior pituitary. First peptide hormone sequenced and synthesized (1953 Nobel Prize). From Greek: 'oxys' (swift) + 'tokos' (birth). Oxytocin receptors are distributed throughout the brain and body.
Mechanism, in plain English
Oxytocin binds OXTR receptors found in uterus, mammary glands, brain (amygdala, hippocampus), heart, and gut. In the brain, it dampens amygdala fear response, promoting trust and reducing social anxiety. It increases dopamine in reward circuits during social interaction. Surges during arousal and orgasm in both sexes. Reduces cortisol output via HPA stress axis interaction.
