What Matrixyl is
Matrixyl is the trade name for palmitoyl pentapeptide-4, developed by Sederma. Five amino acids (KTTKS) linked to palmitic acid for skin penetration. The KTTKS sequence is a fragment of type I procollagen. Several generations: original Matrixyl, Matrixyl 3000, and Matrixyl Synthe'6.
Mechanism, in plain English
When collagen degrades, it releases matrikine fragments that signal fibroblasts to make more collagen. Matrixyl mimics this signal. The KTTKS sequence activates genes for collagen I, III, and fibronectin. The palmitic acid tail helps penetrate the skin barrier. In vitro, Matrixyl nearly doubles collagen synthesis versus controls.

Key study (Lintner, 2002): wrinkle depth reduced up to 68% over 4 months. Additional studies confirm increased collagen I and III, improved skin thickness and elasticity. Matrixyl 3000 showed comparable results to retinol with better tolerability in some comparisons. Limitation: most clinical data is manufacturer-funded.
